Polygon and Nexon partner up to release a MapleStory NFT game

Nexon, a prominent gaming company, is joining forces with the Ethereum-based scaling solution, Polygon, to introduce their latest Web3 game, MapleStory Universe. The collaboration was unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, allowing Nexon to establish a unique Supernet on Polygon for their forthcoming game.

MapleStory Universe: harnessing the power of NFTs and Polygon

Since its 2003 launch, the 2D RPG MapleStory has generated a staggering $4 billion in revenue and garnered over 180 million registered users. 

The franchise’s latest addition, MapleStory Universe, will harness non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to further its success. MapleStory Universe Group Leader Hwang Sun-young underscored Nexon’s dedication to buildion Polygon and fostering a close relationship with Polygon Labs. With faster and more cost-effective transactions compared to Ethereum’s mainnet, Polygon emerges as the perfect fit for Nexon. Polygon Labs VP Urvit Goel elaborated on how Polygon Supernet’s dedicated app chain will facilitate Nexon’s efficient scaling. 

Moreover, Supernets provide customization options and shield decentralized apps (dapps) from possible performance challenges on the wider public network.

Players earn NFTs and trade tokenized assets in Nexon’s groundbreaking MapleStory Universe

MapleStory Universe’s launch date is yet to be determined, but Goel disclosed that players can obtain NFTs by playing the game, with no pre-sales in sight. Furthermore, the game will avoid typical in-app purchases found in mobile games. Instead, MapleStory Universe will focus on tokenized assets that can be exchanged or transferred through its marketplace.

Nexon intends to create a unique cryptocurrency for MapleStory Universe, with specific details pending. South Korea, a crucial market for Nexon, is at the forefront of Web3 gaming advancements. Among the top 10 gaming firms in the country, eight are publicly pursuing blockchain projects. Well-known companies in this space include NCSoft, Netmarble, or Krafton.
