Senegalese NFT Artist Linda Dounia Rebeiz Challenges AI Bias with IN/Visible Exhibition

June 16, 2023

Senegalese NFT artist Linda Dounia Rebeiz is set to present a groundbreaking online exhibition called IN/Visible on June 19 via the cutting-edge platform Feral File. The exhibition will explore the ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) systems often fail to accurately represent people of color.

Rebeiz began exploring the intersection of AI and art in 2021, when she began using generative adversarial networks (GANs) to create artworks inspired by her experiences as a woman growing up in Senegal. She quickly noticed that AI systems were often biased against people of color, with results that often misrepresented facial features and body proportions.

“When I would enter terms like ‘Human’ into AI systems, the results would almost always be images of white men,” said Rebeiz. “But when I would enter terms like ‘Black person,’ the results would often be distorted and inaccurate.”

Rebeiz believes that this bias is due to the fact that AI systems are trained on data sets that are themselves biased. “The data sets that AI systems are trained on are often made up of images of white people,” she said. “This means that the systems are more likely to generate images that are similar to what they’ve been trained on.”

To challenge this bias, Rebeiz has partnered with a group of ten other black artists to create the IN/Visible exhibition. Each artist will contribute an NFT artwork that explores the ways in which AI systems can be used to represent people of color more accurately.

“We want to show the world that AI systems can be used to create beautiful and accurate representations of people of color,” said Rebeiz. “We also want to raise awareness of the issue of AI bias and encourage people to think about how we can make AI systems more inclusive.”

The IN/Visible exhibition will be on view from June 19 to July 31 on the Feral File platform. NFTs for the artworks will be available for purchase for 0.55 ETH apiece.
