NFTs unlikely to be part of Grand Theft Auto 6

New rumors hinting at the possibility of cryptocurrency integration into the widely anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) have surfaced, thereby aligning the popular franchise with the rising Web3 trend. These persistent rumors often suggest NFTs may be employed as rewards and featured as in-game items.

Will cryptocurrencies be mentioned in GTA 6 storyline?

It is quite unlikely that GTA 6 will feature any type of crypto asset. The company has previously banned NFTs from GTA 5 online servers and the play-to-earn model is too experimental and unsustainable for Rockstar Games to even consider it.

However, there might be some substance to the rumors. It is quite likely that there will be a reference to cryptocurrencies within the game’s script. The GTA series is known for its humouristic writing, so we will probably see cryptocurrencies mentioned in a satirical fashion.

Rumors resurfacing

The latest round of rumors emerged on Twitter last week, leading to renewed excitement in the crypto community. However, there’s no concrete evidence suggesting that Rockstar Games, the creator of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, is planning to venture into Web3.

A prominent factor playing against crypto incorporation is the declining viability of the play-to-earn (P2E) model, which allows players to earn cryptocurrencies via gameplay. Once the hype of blockchain-based games, P2E’s sustainability is now questionable.

Grand Theft Auto V, according to Statista, has sold over 180 million units worldwide since 2015, making it one of the highest-grossing game titles ever released. Over the past decade, the franchise, owned by Take-Two Interactive, has generated over $8 billion in revenue. Given this success, Rockstar has no incentive to shift towards a risky P2E model.

Further lending credibility to the notion of a crypto-free GTA 6 is Rockstar’s recent stance on NFTs. In November 2022, Rockstar updated its guidelines, stating that fan-operated servers for Grand Theft Auto V can no longer use NFTs.

No official statement from Rockstar

Rockstar Games has remained silent on these rumors, neither confirming nor denying them. As fans eagerly anticipate the release of GTA 6 in 2024, the question of crypto integration will surely continue to spark debate.
