The Pokémon Company has recently advertised a job vacancy for the position of Corporate Development Principal. The job description revealed that the ideal candidate for this role should have extensive knowledge of Web3, including blockchain technologies, NFTs, and the metaverse.
The Pokémon Company is hiring web3 talent
The new job position aims to foster innovation at the company, which has been credited with having the most valuable entertainment franchise globally for the past 24 years.
The company seeks an individual who is well-versed in the Web3 domain and has strong connections within the fintech industry.
It is unclear from the job listing what precise actions The Pokémon Company intends to undertake in Web3. However, the advertisement implies that the organization is possibly exploring novel technologies. As a part of their role, the Corporate Development Principal will create an internal “innovation challenge” and investigate possible collaborations with external firms concerning emerging technologies.
Gotta catch ’em all
From a business viewpoint, Pokémon is a perfect fit for web3 integration. This is why we see many copycat projects, with some resulting in lawsuits from The Pokémon Company or investors being scammed.
Pokémon is also responsible for inspiring many play-to-earn games we see today, with Axie Infinity being a great example. Pixelmon, the most well-known unofficial illustration, generated $70 million in NFT sales at the beginning of last year. However, the artwork that they subsequently revealed received widespread ridicule.
Simultaneously, Niantic, the creator of the highly popular mobile game Pokémon Go, is placing emphasis on what it calls a “real-world metaverse” of games that are founded on Augmented Reality (AR).
The Pokémon Company is highly interested in the metaverse
The Pokémon Company manages not only a broad spectrum of games but also media and merchandise based on the longstanding franchise. This includes console and mobile games, TV shows and films, collectible trading cards, toys, clothing, and several other products.
The President of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated in February 2022 that the gaming behemoth perceives the notion of the metaverse as having “significant potential”. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Nintendo does not feel an urgency to develop games for the metaverse.
Thus far, The Pokémon Company has not engaged in any Web3 initiatives. However, the newly published job vacancy could imply that the organization is finally prepared to venture into the realm of Web3.
As a part of their duties, the Corporate Development Principal will counsel the company’s management on strategic approaches and assist with networking and the research of innovative prospects.
