Barbie, the beloved Mattel’s toy figure, has once again reinvented herself. This time, she’s stepping into the world of Web3, aided by the women-led brand Boss Beauties. Together, these two powerhouses are launching a unique line of on-chain virtual collectibles, offering a nostalgic trip down Barbie’s illustrious career lane since her inception in 1959.

A celebration of Barbie’s diverse careers

The debut collection, “Boss Beauties x Barbie,” is an homage to Barbie’s 250 careers. Crafted in Boss Beauties’ signature style, the NFTs include a wide array of professions – artists, astronauts, CEOs, doctors, veterinarians, pilots, and more.

Sold as a pack of four on the NFT-specialized Flow blockchain, these collectibles are available for a mere $25, avoiding the complexities of cryptocurrency transactions.

As Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, pointed out, the partnership is a proud step towards enabling women and collectors to explore the virtual world of Web3.

Real-world perks and a chance to be rare

Early access to the Boss Beauties x Barbie collection is already available, with the official launch scheduled for May 18 at Veecon. Each pack will offer a surprise element, presenting NFTs of varying rarity levels that unlock both digital and real-world perks. 

Holders could get their hands on “common” cards or even “super rare,” “ultra rare,” and “exclusive” ones. The rarest of these unlock tangible rewards, like limited-edition Barbie “Career of the Year” doll sets or tickets to the immersive “World of Barbie” exhibition in Los Angeles.

The future of Barbie and Web3

The Boss Beauties x Barbie collaboration promises much more than just NFTs. Additional benefits include access to virtual Career Conversations with women leaders and a surprise virtual collectible for early-access purchasers. 

Furthermore, the Warner Bros. Barbie film starring Margot Robbie, set to premiere in July, will reveal an exclusive career trait. This foray into Web3 underscores Mattel’s commitment to integrating blockchain-based products with its brands, even as the terminology transitions from NFTs to virtual collectibles. Barbie’s journey into the metaverse has just begun, and it’s already looking fascinating.
