Yuga Labs, the company behind the popular NFT projects CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has announced a collaboration with Zak Group to release an official book on CryptoPunks.
The book, which is scheduled to be published in winter 2023, will be a comprehensive look at the history and legacy of CryptoPunks. It will feature contributions from renowned figures in the web3, digital art, design, and tech spaces, as well as content from the CryptoPunks community Discord and Twitter.
“CryptoPunks is an iconic collection that has transcended crypto into broader culture,”
Greg Solano, co-founder of Yuga Labs
“This book is a catalog of that rich history, in the highest quality rendering, that we hope will serve as a source of inspiration for the Punks community and beyond.”
Greg Solano, co-founder of Yuga Labs
The book will be published in a limited-edition format and will be available for purchase through the CryptoPunks website. A portion of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the CryptoPunks Community Treasury.
The collaboration between Yuga Labs and Zak Group is a testament to the growing importance of NFTs in the cultural landscape. CryptoPunks is one of the most recognizable NFT collections in the world, and this book will serve as a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about its history and significance.
A bit of PunkStory
The humble beginnings of a crypto-collectible legend
CryptoPunks were one of the first NFTs minted on Ethereum back in June 2017. These unique digital items are now worth a staggering $1.53 billion!
When they first launched, only 287 wallets claimed the newly minted CryptoPunks for free. The creators, Matt Hall and John Watkinson, were at the helm of the two-person team from Larva Labs studio behind the project.
By the end of the launch day, 291 unique wallets owned CryptoPunks, as the first claimers began trading. A week later, the average price of a Punk had escalated to 0.5 ETH, with a volume of 124 ETH.
In the following years, the number of wallets holding CryptoPunks slowly grew. By April 2018, fewer than 500 unique wallets held CryptoPunks. However, the growth exploded in November 2020, reaching 1,000 wallets, likely driven by the advent of wrapped punks, ERC-721 NFTs, which debuted in September 2020. The tradeable wrapped punks, backed by their original ERC-20 counterparts, are available for exchange on platforms such as OpenSea and Rarible.
Currently, the contract holding wrapped punks remains the largest Punk holder, with 770 Punks still wrapped. Trailing this is NFT company Yuga Labs, which holds 422 Punks.
A million-dollar milestone
CryptoPunks hit a major milestone on February 18, 2021, with a weekly volume of 24,969 ETH, or about $48 million. On the same day, Punk #4156 sold for a record-breaking 650 ETH, equivalent to $1.25 million – the first time a collectible breached the million-dollar mark.
A year later, an unprecedented transaction set a new record: Punk #5822 fetched a staggering 8,000 ETH, roughly $23.7 million, making it the priciest Punk to date.
What to expect from the new CryptoPunks book?
The upcoming book on CryptoPunks is a collaboration between Yuga Labs and Zak Group, a design studio known for its work with Nike, Def Jam Recordings, and The Woolmark Company.
The book is scheduled to be released in the fall, and it will be the first-ever comprehensive catalog of its kind. It will trace the fascinating stories of each Punk in great detail, from their creation to their current status as one of the most iconic NFT collections in the world.
