KilroyPunk NFT Drop Mashes Up Iconic Meme With a CryptoPunk

In an exciting fusion of iconic meme culture and digital blockchain art, multichain NFT protocol Holograph unveiled its latest collaboration on Tuesday. The new offering, titled “KilroyPunk,” is a nod to the famous CryptoPunk #8527, a noteworthy character of the first-ever NFT collection. The project sees a union between artist Eric Elms and the enigmatic foobar, renowned creator of Delegate Cash and a dominant personality on Crypto Twitter.

CryptoPunk inspired collection

KilroyPunk serves as the latest venture in Holograph’s mission to gain a solid foothold in the burgeoning NFT marketplace. This collection marks the third time the multichain protocol has employed its consumer-focused application to deliver its offerings. Available at $15 for 48 hours, this open-edition mint can be claimed an infinite number of times.

Foobar highlighted the significant part played by CryptoPunk 8537 in bolstering brand recognition over time: “It’s a nice remix on top of the classic Punk”. Foobar has accrued a significant following, with more than 133,000 followers on Twitter.

The Kilroy moniker traces back to the 1940s, when “Kilroy Was Here” became an emblem of the American presence on European and Pacific battlefields, often displayed as graffiti. Elms’ usage of Kilroy, a symbol known for its societal commentary, brings a poignant subtext to his foray into the NFT world.

Eric Elms related that his work frequently involves printed materials transformed through collages to impart new significance. As an artist venturing into the digital world, Elms emphasized the importance of recognizing the pixelated aesthetic of CryptoPunks, which is distinctly digital.

“Kilroy has a rich history dating back to World War II and has evolved culturally through different eras,” Elms stated, emphasizing the importance of engaging in a dialogue with the visual and conceptual history of the sub-culture.

Partnership previewed on the streets of NYC

The collaboration between Holograph, foobar, and Elms was previewed on the streets of New York City. This strategy, inspired by counterculture trends in streetwear and skate circles, added to the intrigue surrounding the NFT launch, said Holograph CEO and co-founder Jeff Gluck.

Getting to know Holograph

Holograph, developed by the team at CXIP Labs, offers a multichain approach to digital collectibles. The protocol allows users to mint NFTs on their preferred chain or switch them between different networks. At present, Holograph extends its support to a variety of platforms, namely Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB Chain, and Optimism.

Foobar pointed out Holograph’s ability to address the challenges inherent in this cross-chain process. “I’ve long thought we need a unified user-first experience rather than each project recreating their own cross-chain mechanisms,” he stated.

Holograph’s earlier mint featured the work of artist Jasmine Monsegue, alias Spacebrat. Her first-ever NFT was minted over 300,000 times in a 48-hour period, primarily on Polygon, the Ethereum scaling platform. Gluck cited this as an example of users seeking to avoid high gas fees on networks like Ethereum, underlining the advantages of a multichain approach.

Gluck also shared that having an asset confined to a single blockchain doesn’t make sense and that both consumers and creators increasingly understand the necessity of a multichain approach.
