The crypto industry has continued to witness all manner of scams, with the latest being a Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) holder losing custody of the precious asset due to sloppiness and sluggishness. However, the owner repurchased the digital asset following the help of a Twitter user.
Twitter witnesses an NFT scam
Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) holders have lately fallen victim to criminals who continue to rip them off their digital assets. The recent event of the NFT scam has depicted the sloppiness and slowness of investors realizing self-custody. However, the case also illustrates the stupidity of Web3 criminals.
A Twitter user dubbed Yieldasaurus’s Bored Ape NFT was stolen in a case suspected to arise from poor self-custody measures. The user posted through his Twitter account pleading with the criminal to return the Ape at a cost. The thief used a Twitter user, Khalissman as a mediator to sell the Ape to the owner. The mediator set the price at 66 ETH, which was later changed to 58 ETH, which Yieldasaurus paid to access his Ape NFT.
Ignorance or lack of wisdom
Yieldasaurus quickly blamed everyone but himself for the theft of his Ape. He went to the extent of yelling and calling strangers poor. After five hours of mayhem, the deal was finally struck, with Yieldasaurus becoming the loser.
However, there might be more drama because the mediator, Khalissman, uses a verified Twitter account, and the new policy of maintaining a blue tick requires users to pay a token requiring credit card information. Therefore, pressing charges can lead to obtaining Khalissman’s details from Twitter.
Even if Khalissman fortified the mediation decision, some Twitter users have pointed out several loopholes. Users were accusing Khalissman of the theft of the NFT. On the other hand, if Khalissman was not the thief, the real thief’s details could be retrieved since they worked together to sell the NFT to the owner.
The theft comes just a day after ZachXBT, an on-chain sleuth, reprimanded the long-term scammer 3PEACEART, notorious for tricking unsuspecting victims. In this case, the lack of unearthing the people behind the theft will make Web3 a home for the dumbest criminals.
